Kabdhilinan marks the ankle of Auriga the Charioteer — a K-type giant burning 490 light years away in the northern sky. Its full Arabic name, kaʽb ðīl-ʽinān, means “the ankle of the rein holder.” The precise, grounded point where the charioteer keeps his footing.
There’s one more detail worth knowing: in 1391, Geoffrey Chaucer mentioned this star by name in his Treatise on the Astrolabe — one of the earliest technical astronomy texts written in English. A star that has been called by its name for over 600 years.
