Kaffaljidhmah. The full Arabic name is Al Kaff al Jidhmah – “the cut-short hand.” It was originally the name for an entire group of stars marking the head of Cetus the Whale, a chain of stars that ancient Arabic astronomers imagined as an outstretched hand, its fingers reaching across the sky toward the Pleiades. A hand that was cut short – not quite reaching what it stretched toward.
It is a triple star system – an easily viewed double star, with a third companion so far away it takes over 1.5 million years to complete a single orbit. Three stars. One name. One story of a hand that almost made it.
This arrow is white with red and tiny black lines – precise, graphic, quietly complex. Turkey feather fletch, naturally shed. Hand-shaped hardwood shaft, stained, finished, and branded with the Hotfelt mark. Made in Los Angeles. One of a kind.
