I couldn’t throw them away.

Every time I fletch a peacock feather arrow, tiny strands break off at the edges- the fine, iridescent filaments too small to use, too beautiful to lose. I kept them for almost a year without knowing why.

This is why.

The cedar shaft is stained dark walnut brown from tip to nock. The metal tip hand-engraved with the Hotfelt mark using a Dremel. And then- every inch of the shaft wound in those tiny peacock strands, layered until no wood shows through. The whole arrow becomes feather. Up close, you can see the stem of the feather woven in. That’s how you know it isn’t fabric.

Named after Peacock- the brightest star in Pavo the Peacock constellation, mapped by Dutch navigators sailing to the East Indies in the 1590s. In Greek mythology the peacock was Hera’s sacred bird, her chariot drawn by peacocks through the air. The eyes on the peacock’s feathers belong to Argus- the hundred-eyed giant. When Argus was killed by Hermes, Hera placed all one hundred of his eyes onto the tail of her peacock.

The star was named in 1937 by the UK’s Nautical Almanac Office for the Royal Air Force- they required all navigation stars to have proper names, so they called this one Peacock. A practical decision that became permanent and poetic.

This is the second arrow in the Remnant Series- twelve arrows, one for every month, each made from a different material that carries meaning. Dropped on the new moon. Made once. Never repeated.

Cedar shaft wrapped entirely in peacock feather remnants. Dark walnut stain. Black metal tip hand-engraved with the Hotfelt mark.

One of a kind. Will not be made again. 🦚🌑
